One thing about choosing a beach wedding theme is that it allows you total creative freedom. Depending on the time of day, the beach can set the mood. At sunrise or sunset, it is a place of serenity, beauty and romance. Mid-day, it is the hub of excitement, activity, and fun. By nature, a beautiful scene has already been set for you. There is no need for many decorations!

Perhaps you will marry in a romantic sunrise ceremony followed by a breakfast reception. How about an early afternoon wedding followed by a beach barbeque? By the way...

Don't rule out a beach wedding because you don't live near an ocean. The definition of a "beach" is - "the shore of a body of water, especially if sandy or pebbly". That includes lakes and rivers. For that matter, you may have a "beach" by your swimming pool. There are no rules. Be creative!

Bus to Pangkor

The bus is a great way of transport in Malaysia. Not only the quality of the busses is great, most of the roads are in excellent condition. Get the bus from Penang (Butterworth) to Pangkor, it takes only 2 1/2 hours. From Kuala Lumpur only 3 hours. Most busses are VIP or Super VIP. Even for tall westerners these busses are comfortable.

The bus in Malaysia is faster, and I mean FASTER, then the train. Even a journey from Lumut (the gateway to Pulau Pangkor) to Singapore takes only 10-12 hours, all through the night. Come to Malaysia and take the bus!

If you're tired of the same old routes, and you're on your way to Malaysia, why no try a different route. Forget Langkawi and Penang, especially if you have been there already.

I just come back from a short trip to Thailand and cycled this road now for the second time. And again I was happy to take this one. Yes, it's quite an amount of kilometers to make but it was worth.

Strange enough, this part of Malaysia is not known for its beauty. And still it is beautiful. The road I took from Hat Yai to Yala and then Betong was nice, hilly but not too much and scenic.

For any more or less experienced cyclist, especially those who have been to Langkawi and Pengang, this is a must do.

The First Day of the Chinese New Year

Last night was the New Years Eve for the Chinese people at Pangkor and surroundings. We celebrated this night with Eunice's family and a few friends. So, how did we celebrate? We had a big barbeque with lamb and birds. As some of the readers know, birds are widely eaten in Malaysia. And it's tasty good meat.

Going around in the Pangkor area you will see every now and then big brick buildings with no windows. These buildings are usually for breeding birds. Partly it is for the the bird-nests which Chinese consider a delicatese, partly it's for the birds itself which are sold to restaurants and private persons.

The Chinese New Year started at 12 pm with a big firework. The neigbours had a monstreous firecracker roll (of the kind which is for many years illegal in Holland). Lots of noise but, according to some of the older Chinese, the evil spirits where now chased away.

Pasir Bogak, greatest swimming pool on earth?

Pasir Bogak is known in Malaysia as "the greatest swimming pool on earth". It was time to explore this claim a bit further. Therefor last weekend finally we took some time to explore a bit more of the area of Pasir Bogak. Had we not done it yet? Had we forgotten Pasir Bogak was the singel most popular beach of Pulau Pangkor?

The answer is simple, we had been there but not extensively. We even had not made pictures there! This time it was for real. We hiked the beach so to say. And I have to admit, despite the fact that this beach is so popular, especially by local tourists, it's still a good beach.

Yes, there's quite some hotels in the area, mostly the slightly more expensive ones but there's at least ONE real nice one: Sri
Bayu.

A lunch above the sea, Dolphin Beach Resort

Sound great huh? Eunice and I did a bit of walking on Pangkor last sunday. It was quite nice though the jungle trek was a bit difficult. During the rainy season the jungle is full of leeches. Rainy season? Pangkor does not suffer much on the monsoon. Yes, there's days it rains the shits out. (sorry to be rude) However, we haven't seen much rain the last 2 months.

But there were too many leeches in the jungle. The jungle trek we started at the north part of Pangkor. But after a kilometer it became clear we to skip the further trek. Especially Eunice's feet were full of leeches.

So we went back and walked from the main road to Teluk Dalam. I felt quite comfortable though I became hungry. Eunice was very thirsty. So we decided to have a lunch at the Dolpin Beach Resort.

The Dolpin Beach Resort is a new building partly situated about the surf breakers. The rooms are mostly just above the line of sea and beach. The restaurant is completely above the sea. The wind blew slowly but with the help of some fans we sat comfortably on the restaurant platform.

We ordered a big pot of tea since this is still the best remedy for a thirsty throat. The lunch was simple but good. We had some noodle soup wiht excellent fish and tom yam fried rice. Good, tasty food and reasonable priced.

The view from here is quite spectaculair. The Dolphin Beach resort is to be found in between Teluk Dalam and the Pangkor Island Beach Resort. It's a nice place for a stopover if you go around Pangkor on Motor(cycle). Besides, you may want to have a seim here too. There's hardly anyone to disturb your fun.

Market in Kampong Koh

Markets are for the western tourist always something special. Markets in Asia are different then in the west. Therefore I would like to introduce you to another market in the area of Pangkor. This is an afternoon market in the town of Kampong Koh.

Kampong Koh is part of Greater Sitiawan. You will find it when you take the direction from to Sitiawan from Lumut. In the centre of Sitiawan, you take the junction to Teluk Intan. Kampong Koh is about 3 kilometers away.

When you arrive in Kampong Koh, pass the traffic lights and take the first road left. You will find the market straight on your right hand.

The market is s typical local kind of market. It's nothing special but it's a nice place to do some shopping on clothes and food. Of course there are some stalls so you won't be hungry.

The market in Kampong Koh is every tuesday afternoon open.

The Lumut Valley Resort Condominium

The Lumut Valley Resort Condominium is one of the nicest places to stay in Lumut. The LVRC as it is sometimes called, hosts not only tourist on their way to Pangkor Island. Some of their guests stay for a long time in the hotel. It's because the facilities are so well done, that it is a great place to stay for some time.

But who wants to stay somewhere for some weeks or even months? Some of the guests work in the Naval Base, some others work in the nearby plant. There are some expats and retired people too.

Lumut is a good place to stay for some time if you want to have some western styled restaurants and bars. Tsunami and Pangkor

We live here comfortable in Sitiawan. The Tsunami passed us just by. We were lucky. Milliosn were not. So far more then 150.000 people died. Millions are homeless and/or without home.

I have been traveling in many of the now hitted areas. I remember Mamalapuram and Chennai very well. My 3 week stay at the Andaman Islands (Neil Island) was one of the best places I ever visited. I dare not to imagine what those places look like now.

But I read the newspapers online. And what do we read in the New York Times at the Front Page? The Tsunami is already down to issue number 4. The Volkskrant in the Netherlands and The Irish Times do not even mention it anymore on the front page. The English Guardian do mention it on the bottom of their internet page.

Television still pays attention. But for how long will the Tsunami be "news"? How long will it take us to "forget" the disaster or have we already forgotten the disaster in the Indian Ocean? Thai market in Sitiawan

For all your shopping lovers, 10 km away from Pangkor Island, a Thai market has set up it's tents. It's a normal market with the usual clothes, toys, stationary and other small stuff. It's worth a visit if you visit for some shopping.
But, if you go, don't forget to visit the nearby Fesyen Jolin, the fine fashion shop on Jalan Lumut, about 100 meters walk from the Thai market.

The market will be in Sitiawan until the end of January.

No damage on Pangkor after the Tsunami

Sometimes news is bad. But there are days the news is worse. The Tsunami of last sunday the 26th December caused after the earthquake made many victims. I read a third of the victims will be most possibly children. We here in Pangkor did not suffer from anything of the flood. Pangkor Island is completly undamaged and safe to come. I have been to Pangkor, cycled around but fortunately there were no signs of any damage. Some people told me they felt the earth shaking but that was it.

However, Penang has suffered as did the area just south of Penang. Some fishermans villages around Buntar were not so lucky. This note is just to let all readers know there is no problem at Pulau Pangkor. For information, please call us or use the contact form

Lumut Valley Resort Condominium

Lumut is a very small town, actually more a village then a town. Still there are quite some hotels around. The reason is simple. Lumut is the entrance port for going to Pangkor Island. So, why would people stay in Lumut?

Last year I visited this area, I wasn't living in Sitiawan at that time, and thought it was ok for an evening. There's not much to do but still there were quite some foreigners. I figured out most of them work in the nearby plant.

And I also realised that some of them lived in the Lumut Valley Resort Condominium. You can't really miss the condomium. It's the talest building in the Lumut, probably with the exception of some buildings on a nearby hilltop. The condomium has rooms for long and short term visitors. Tiger rock

Yesterday, the 18th Dec, Peter and I went to Tiger Rock. Tiger Rock is located just behind the Dutch Fort in the middle of the jungle.

It is a brilliant place for get a real traditional Malaysian experience with the jungle just outside the door, hornbill flying over and monkeys running around the swimming pool. Animals on Pangkor

This will be in a later stage a full page on the site. Here's just a short note on the more interesting animals on Pangkor. There's three that almost every visitor will see when you stay for a few days.

First, of course, there are the monkeys. There's plenty of them and they are not shy. I haven't heard of monkeys stealing clothes or cameras but if you leave your bag with food in it, don't be surprised if the monkeys find the food.

Second are the hornbill birds. They are plentyfull on the island. The older examples have enormous beaks. You wonder how they can carry them. Many of them have very colourfull feathers. Especially in the evening they come out to the streets and eat what is left by humans.

Last but not least are the biawaks. Biawaks are straighforward cousins of the more known Komodo Dragon. The Komodo Dragon grows up to three meters but the biawaks usually will not be that big. Still, they are not affraid of humans and on the northern part of Pangkor you will see them without any haste crossing the road. Biawaks are reptiles and they can be quite aggressive so be careful when you have an encounter.

Another lovely beach

Just a quick note to mention a new beach I just found yesterday. For visitors of Pulau Pangkor this beach can be an excellent day out. You can combine a visit (like a lunchstop) at Pantai Remis with a visit to this beach. The beach is to be found in between Segari and Pantai Remis. Coming from Lumut/Pulau Pangkor, drive north in the direction of Taiping.

After Segari, keep an open eye for the Lumut Power Plant. It's a small road to the left. At the very end of this road you'll find a lovely beach. As said, it's quite remote. Local people from Pantai Remis and Segari do go there for sea fishing. Foreigners and other Malaysian tourist do not know it.

Teluk Rubiah, a perfect beach on the mainland in Malaysia

Teluk Rubiah has no longer just a private beach. Everybody is nowadays welcome there. Unfortunately not everyone knows this. Therefore I thought it was great to have a spot where I drop this note.

Teluk Rubiah, just opposite of Pangkor, is an excellent place. The chalets are very nice, the beach is great, water clean and there's a swimming pool for those who do not dare to go in the sea.

Malaysian food

Some days are better then others. Today was one of the better ones. Why? I had some excellent Malaysian food. We started with Indian Tosai, then I was given some wonderful mee rebus and a very late lunch I had some nice spiced prawn noodles. What else does a man further need?

Daytrips are easily organised with Pangkor as a base. However, if you come from either Kuala Lumpur or Penang, you can visit Ipoh, Taiping and Kuala Kangsar before coming here. It will take two days to visit and still have time to come here at Pulau Pangkor.

Pasir Salak

I went last sunday to Pasir Salak, on bike, 125 km. It was a nice ride from Pangkor to some place in the vicinity of Pangkor. Pasir Salak takes an important place in Malaysian history. We have set up a page with the full story of Pasir Salak plus how to get there.

Malaysia has a long and turbulent history. When you come to Pangkor for a holiday, hang out on the beach but if you are interested in the history of Malaysia and Perak (the province where Pangkor is located) with it's tin mining history, this is probably your best change to increase your knowledge.

Pulau Pangkor, a great day cycling to Pasir Salak

Cycling around Pangkor is fine, but also around Pangkor, it's good cycling. For example, take a nice day to Pasir Salak. You'll have about 120 km to do which for an exeperienced cyclist is not much of a problem.

Cycling on Pangkor is quite an easy job. Having said that, especially on the north site the is a short but nasty little climb, no more then about 700 meters to do. If you haven't cycled much, it can be a bit of a problem. The experienced cyclist will do it (as we say in Dutch) with two fingers in the nose. I have cycled it many times now. Pulau Pangkor's history

In the area there are a few excellent places to visit with a rich history. Think of Ipoh, Taiping, Kuala Kangsar and, maybe most of all Pasir Salak.
